Violet, today you are 4 years old.
It's been an incredible year for you! We've finally found a pre-school that everyone likes. You really seem to enjoy it and are learning so much. You love to tell us about your day and are getting really close to reading. This year you learned how to swim without a floaty. We still make you wear it most of the time, but it's fun to watch you swim without it. You still hate wearing it. When we were in Missouri this summer you loved being in the lake and had such a good time jumping off the edge of the boat into the water. You are fearless and, as much as I love it...it does make me nervous.
You still wake up pretty early. You wake up about 6, hungry, and have a bowl of cereal. Then you have some of whatever Laura's having for breakfast, then I get up and you eat breakfast with me. And by then it's time for another bowl of cereal so you'll eat a third breakfast, sometimes with Amelia, sometimes by yourself. What I'm saying is, you might be part hobbit.
You're a pretty adventurous eater at this point. You'll try just about anything we put in front of you. You don't eat much of it, but you then try to get a snack between dinner and bedtime. You just really like eating.
Often we'll hear a crash in the next room followed immediately by you saying, "everything's okay!" You really want to learn ballet and dragged your Grandma Liz to the store to buy you a tutu. She got as close as she could, thank goodness. Sometimes you choose a dress to wear based on how well it twirls. You love having your nails painted and pronounce nail polish as, "pail nolish."
You love baking with me and being outside. You're a sweet and sensitive kid and are just a joy to be around. You enjoy being helpful and love helping to clean house. One of my favorite things is how much you love coloring. For months you would take a piece of paper and color every inch of it. It became less about creating a pretty picture and more a statement about filling the page. “I have crayons and a blank page, why WOULDN’T I fill it?” It was a profound artistic statement for a 3-year-old.
You are quick to cry during movies, which, if I'm honest is also something I do, so, sorry about that. You love Frozen and Moana and singing songs you learned in school. Like your Grandpa Billy, you sing a lot of songs with your own words. The last few days you’ve been singing “God bless the ‘merica” and “Gloria, in excel she day-o.” My favorite is when you say the Pledge of Allegiance, you say, “and to the Republic for witches dance,” which I like better, honestly.
Violet, you have so much love to give and so many thoughts to share and stories to tell. I love hearing all of them. Violet, always remember that your thoughts and your stories are important. Never let anyone tell you they don’t have value. Whatever you do and wherever you go, tell your stories. Share your thoughts. Fill those blank spaces with your color and like I told you last year, demand better.
Happy birthday, Violet. I love you.
